31 Migrants From Haiti Were Intercepted in Western Zone of Puerto Rico

Federal authorities reported on Wednesday that they intercepted 31 Haitian immigrants, 25 men, four women and two minors, who were left stranded by smugglers on Monito Island in western Puerto Rico.

“Smugglers and bad actors continue to spread falsehoods and show total disregard for the safety and well-being of vulnerable migrants venturing into the Mona passage,” said Desi DeLeon in a statement, Chief Officer of the Ramey Sector Patrol.
The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico rangers working on Monito Island, reported the presence of immigrants in the upper part of the island.
An aircraft of the Air and Maritime Operations of the Customs and Border Protection Office flew over the island and reported more than 20 people abandoned on it.
The US Coast Guard vessel Joseph Dixon took 31 immigrants from Haiti on board on Tuesday and transported them to the port of entry in Mayagüez, a municipality in western Puerto Rico.
Border patrol agents at Ramey Station took custody for processing and deportation procedures.
Similarly, the US Coast Guard in San Juan reported on Monday that it repatriated 58 immigrants to the Dominican authorities on Thursday after intercepting an irregular boat in waters near Mona Island, Puerto Rico.
